Rookie Report: NSW Cup side firmly in the mix

The nib Newcastle Knights Knock-On-Effect NSW Cup squad will be back in action this weekend when they face the Newtown Jets in a rescheduled match at Maitland Sports Ground this Saturday.

The fixture will give the chance for the team to post two wins on the bounce after a thrilling 22-20 win over the Canberra Raiders in Wagga Wagga last start.

After hitting the lead with only minutes to play, the Knights conceded a try on the full-time siren, however the Raiders goal-kicker missed the conversion from a tough angle to the relief of the red and blue.

"It was edge of your seat stuff," Coach Andrew Ryan said.

"We were all in shock when Pasami (Saulo) got hurt and there was a bit of a break in play.

"When we returned, it was a very tight game and I thought we did well in the second half to build pressure and score some points.

"The last few minutes was all a bit of a blur from scoring ourselves to their short kick off, which lead to them scoring in the last minute.

"Thankfully we got the win."

A devastating ankle injury to Pasami Saulo marred the result for the NSW Cup team.

Saulo was stretchered from the field after a lengthy break in play as the medical team assisted the forward.

"Everyone in the whole club loves having Pasami around," Ryan said.

"His form has been excellent and when he's had opportunities in the NRL, he's done well.

"It was very unfortunate to get an injury like that and he has our full support."

Still reeling from the loss of a key player, the team responded from the blow to post the victory.

Hooker Luke Huth again stood out for the Knights in defence and attack.

The dummy half made 38 tackles and contributed two line breaks and a try assist for Mat Croker.

Matt Soper-Lawler scored the decisive try for the Knights in the dying stages and also ran for 100 metres from eight runs.

Josh King led in the middle with a team-high 14 hit ups and ran for 135 metres.

The team will play in their rescheduled Round 2 game which was postponed against the Newtown Jets.

Newcastle enjoyed a 42-22 rout over Newtown only four rounds a go and will aim for another two points against their upcoming opposition.

The win kept the side in seventh and within touching distance of the top four, while improving their record to four wins and four losses.

Round 10 NSW Cup Team List

"It's a tight competition and things can change quickly with injuries and what is happening with the NRL sides," Ryan said.

"We play the Jets and then we have the bye the following week, there's lots of bumps and bruises so that will be a good time to freshen the guys up.

"And hopefully from there we can have a big finish to the back end of the year."
