NYC CANBERRA DEF KNIGHTS

2008-08-17

The Newcastle Knights have gone down to the Canberra Raiders 56-20 in their Toyota Cup clash at Canberra Stadium.

Canberra captain Shaun Fensom was instrumental in his side's victory scoring a hat trick of tries and added some starch to the Raiders pack with a number of solid hits in defence.

Newcastle opened the scoring in the first minute when Simon Williams stood up his opposite number and beat him on the outside to race away to the tryline untouched.

Shaun Fensom scored the first of his trifecta of tries when he crossed for the home side in the ninth minute after he caught out some tired Newcastle defence which was slow to adjust on the inside making it 6 all.

The Green Machine showed why they are competition favourites in the Toyota Cup in the ensuing minutes when they pounded the Knights line scoring four unanswered tries in the following twenty minutes giving them a 28-6 lead.

Newcastle were able to shorten the deficit just before halftime when talented fullback Marty Paulson broke through the Canbera defence to give a pass to Kalifa Fai Fai Loa backing up on the inside to make it 28-12 going into the halftime break.

The back breaker for the Knights came in the 43rd minute when Shaun Fensom crossed for his 3rd try for the raiders to make it 34-12. Newcastle then conceeded back to back tries shortly after when Zach Merrit and Drury Lowe scored for the home side giving them a 44-12 lead.

Daniel Issac scored a wonderful solo try for Newcastle late in the match when he beat 3 defenders on the way to the tryline to make it 44-16 and from that the Knights were able to build on that pressure and post another try shortly after when Kevin Naiqama crossed in the corner after some great lead up work by Callum Richardson.

Canberra continued to grind away at the Knights posting a further 2 tries  before fulltime giving them a 56-20 victory and continue their run for the Toyota Cup minor premiership. Newcastle face the North Queensland Cowboys next week at Energy Australia Stadium.
