Finals bound: Knights headed for September footy after win over the Sharks

The nib Newcastle Knights NRL side have defeated the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks 32-6 at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday night.

In front of a second consecutive capacity crowd and celebrating the traditional Old Boys Day, the Knights ran in six tries to one to notch eight wins on the bounce.

It's official! The result assures the red and blue of a top six finish this season and a home semi-final.

HOW IT PLAYED OUT:

1st min - The match kicked off in front of 29,423 people at McDonald Jones Stadium - eclipsing the previous round as the Club's biggest home crowd attendance of the season.

6th min - The Sharks opened the scoring through Connor Tracey.

20th min - The Knights hit back with that man again, Kalyn Ponga proving the difference.

A set move had the fullback bursting through the Sharks defence for the first points for the red and blue.

28th min - Desperate defence from Dylan Lucas saved a certain try, stopping a hard-running Briton Nikora.

40th min - In a tight and bruising first 40, the two teams were locked at 6-all.

48th min - After a sensational run from Ponga, the Knights were on the attack.

Adam Clune saw an opportunity on the left side and hit Bradman Best, with the centre scoring untouched.

57th min - Dom Young would finally get his try, creating a slice of history in the process.

A well-weighted long ball from Tyson Gamble freed up the flying Englishman for his 21st try of the season and equalling the Club record for most tries in a single season.

63rd min - Ponga was in the action again teeing up Bradman for his second.

Having copped a knock in the process, Ponga would find Best to continue the scoring for Newcastle.

65th min - The Knights were rolling when Greg Marzhew proved unstoppable for the side's fifth try.

75th min - Forward Dylan Lucas sealed the victory with a well deserved try.

Picking up the loose ball, Lucas sensed an opportunity and capitalised with a sensational solo try and his first in the NRL.

80th min - The full-time whistle would sounded with the Knights scoring a convincing 32-6 victory.
