Knights defeated by fast finishing Cowboys outfit

The nib Newcastle Knights NRLW side have gone down 31-20 to the North Queensland Cowboys in Round 2 at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday.

After Newcastle led by eight during the second half, the Cowboys finished on top with four tries and a field goal in the last 15 minutes.

The result is the first loss of the campaign for the NRLW side while the team will look to respond against Parramatta next start in a Grand Final rematch.

HOW IT PLAYED OUT:

1st min - The match kicked off as part of an NRLW double header at Belmore Sports Ground.

2nd min - The Knights started promisingly posting the first points inside the opening minutes.

A Caitlan Johnston line-break led to a try in the corner for Sheridan Gallagher who celebrated her first try in the NRLW competition.

8th min - Newcastle extended their lead when a high kick bounced favourably to Shanice Parker to score.

17th min - The Cowboys worked their way back into the contest with some second phase play setting up Jasmine Peters for their first try.

21st min - The competition newcomers were level when Jetaya Faifua crossed the stripe.

34th min - North Queensland took the lead into the change of ends with Kirra Dibb converting a penalty goal.

35th min - The Knights would trail the Cowboys 12-10 at the break.

47th min - Newcastle would re-gain the lead with Gallagher going in for her second of the game.

49th min - The Knights extended their advantage with Rima Butler crossing under the posts for her first try in Knights colours.

The forward saw open space and powered her way to the line for the side's fourth try of the match.

56th min - North Queensland bridged the deficit when Vitalina Naikore went over.

60th min - Bree Chester scored in the corner for the Cowboys to level the scores at 20-20 with 10 to play.

63rd min - Cowboys halfback Dibb added a field goal to put the Cowboys ahead.

66th min - North Queensland continued to score with Sareka Mooka posting their fifth try.

69th min - The Cowboys finished the game with their sixth try with Naikore getting her second.

70th min - The match finished 31-20 to the Cowboys.

The Knights will travel away to play the Parramatta Eels at CommBank Stadium next Sunday.
