This Sunday, the nib Newcastle Knights will play in their hi-vis replica mining jersey when they take on the St George Illawarra Dragons at Kogarah.
For the fifth year running, the Club will partner with NSW Mining to celebrate the mining industry’s contribution to the Hunter region.
Knights prop Josh King, who was an apprentice electrician at Bulga Coal for three years, knows just how important mining is to the region.
“The mining area was almost what Newcastle was built on,” said King.
“It is one of the main industries the Hunter thrives on and it has given a lot of jobs to local people.”
The 21-year-old says he’s excited to put on the strip this weekend for the Alex McKinnon Cup and again against the West Tigers at home the weekend after.
“It would be great to see a lot of people down at McDonald Jones Stadium with their hi-vis on,” said King.
“Hopefully we can get a good crowd to come out.”
Thousands of miners and their families as well as those that work in mining-related businesses are expected to attend the match next weekend.
Fans and mining supporters are encouraged to join the team in wearing bright orange at the game.
“Coming back home it is always very special, my first win was a couple of weeks ago at home and that’s a feeling I can’t describe,” commented King.
