The Newcastle Knights will not appeal the NRL’s downgraded sanction for a breach of the head injury rules in Round 3.
The NRL issued the Club with a Breach Notice on Monday March 20, following an alleged concussion involving Brendan Elliot.
“As a Club, we absolutely support the NRL in strengthening the rules and improving the management of head injuries suffered by players,” CEO Matt Gidley said.
The Club thoroughly investigated the matter and sought independent evaluation by a leading concussion specialist, before providing a formal response to the NRL.
“We adamantly support our medical staff and the integrity they demonstrate in the management of our players,” Gidley added.
Regardless of the outcome, the Club remains extremely disappointed in the process that the NRL has undertaken in regards to this matter.
“As a Club we will write to the NRL and express our disappointment in the manner this process has been managed,” Gidley concluded.
THURSDAY APRIL 6:
The NRL finalised the Newcastle Knights' sanction for a breach of the head injury rules in Round 3.
The Club received a significantly reduced $50,000 fine, with $50,000 now suspended.
Despite the reduction, the Club remains disappointed and will now consider the appeal process.
When the matter is finalised, the Club will make a public statement.
