As a young boy, nib Newcastle Knights forward Jamie Buhrer couldn’t think of anything better than to get his hands-on memorabilia from the NRL players he looked up to after a game.

Years on, the tables have turned. An NRL player himself, he now gives his headgear to an excited young fan in the crowd after every game.

“It’s obviously not something too new among the NRL players that wear headgear but it’s something that myself and Paladin Sports thought would be a good idea,” said Buhrer.

“After every game, I try and seek out a young fan… and give away my headgear.

“Being a fan myself once, going to games, every bit of memorabilia that I could get my hands on I would definitely cherish, so it’s something small I can do for the community.”

But for this Friday’s Marvel themed game against the Penrith Panthers, he’s doing things a little bit differently.

The Knights second rower will wear it before auctioning it off along with his Marvel jersey.

“We’ve got headgear for the Iron Patriot, it matches with our Marvel uniform this weekend and Paladin were able to come up with what is a really cool design,” commented Buhrer.

“With such a special occasion, being the Marvel round, we thought we’d take the opportunity to have an auction for charity, with all the proceeds to go to the Mark Hughes Foundation.”

The Knights forward believes his chosen charity, the Mark Hughes Foundation, is a worthy cause.

“It’s very much Newcastle,” Buhrer said.

“It has touched the lives of a lot of people very close to the Club and Newcastle as a town.

“I think this charity will really appeal to the Hunter region, it’s something that is incredibly worthwhile.”

Buhrer looks forward to running out in the Iron Patriot jersey and headgear on Friday, for the Round 4 clash against the Penrith Panthers.

“I wish I had a suit to put on but I can’t wait to get out there,” he said.

NYC and NRL will be action at Pepper Stadium on Friday, with NYC kicking off at 3.45pm before NRL at 6pm.
