Newcastle Knight Jarrod Mullen will undertake a fitness test this week in order to play this Sunday’s match against the South Sydney Rabbitohs in what is the Club’s final home game of 2016.

Mullen has been on light duties during the week in order to allow a knee injury time to recover.

“I have to get through tonight’s session and Captains’ Run, but at this stage it’s looking promising but I will have to wait and see,’ Mullen said on Thursday afternoon.

“It was a bit dodgy last week, but is getting better as the week gets along.

“It’s definitely (important) to play these last two games.”

Mullen is particularly eager to take the field for one of the Club’s most hallowed occasions, Old Boys Day.

“It’s such a big game and such a big occasion for the team and the town,” he said.

“I have played on a few Old Boys Days now.

“When you’re out there and all the ex-players are clapping you on, it gives you such a rush and makes you so proud to wear the red and blue.

“A lot of the boys wouldn’t have played on Old Boys Day, in first grade anyway.

“It will be a big occasion for them.”

In addition to that emotion and passion, the team will also be inspired to ensure co-captain Jeremy Smith’s final home game at Hunter Stadium is a positive experience.

“It’s Jez’ last game he’ll ever play (at home) which is massive too,” he said.

“I definitely want to be out there with the boys and helping them along."

Mullen praised the celebrated veteran forward for his immense contribution to the Club and game.

“He has always led from the front on and off the field,” he said.

“He has been a tremendous player for so many years and it has been a privilege to play with him.

“He has won a couple of grand finals at different Club’s.

“He has had a good career and I just want to finish it off on a good note for him.”

Looking to the Rabbitohs, Mullen predicts a big game for the Knights’ forward pack.

“They are such a big team and like to roll through the middle,’ he said.

“They are very strong all over the park.

“If we can match them in the forwards it’s going to give us a chance.”
