A strong team performance secured the NYC Newcastle Knights a 36-24 win against the Gold Coast Titans at Hunter Stadium on Saturday in what was a must win match as the side fights to keep finals hopes alive.
Knights TV caught up with NYC teammates Tom Starling and Cameron King in the sheds after the match.
“It was a really good win for the boys,” Starling said.
“We started off a bit slow, but really brought it together in the second half and really clicked as well.
“They were a good side and had some big forwards and their halves and fullback were really electrifying.
“We played some really good footy, we just went at them and we got it in the end.”
A spirited second half comeback was inspired by the direction of NYC coach Todd Lowrie in the sheds at half time.
“He (Lowrie) just said to stick to our structures. We were starting to break them down early in the half.
“I think we did that and soon as we got momentum, our forwards got forward and our backs finished it off well.
“We stuck to what we needed to do and finish the game off."
The young hooker was proud of how the team rallied together as a collective unit to overpower the Titans.
“I think the whole team really bought into the mentality this week that it’s do-or-die to make the semis,” he said.
“Everyone switched on and started playing some good footy and we stuck to what we know.”
Cameron King was a two-try contributor in the game, which carried plenty of weight as the team approaches the business end of the season.
“It was a good game for the boys. We knew it was do-or-die and that we needed to turn up with everything we have as our season would be over,” he said.
“The boys did a great job, as they did last week.
“It was good to be out there.
“We knew if we completed our sets and stuck to what we know, we would get it over them.
“We played tough and our middle really stood up today. We all worked together to get away with the win.”
