Newcastle Knight Tyrone Amey has successfully completed study at Hunter TAFE and moved directly into the workforce all while training and playing in the NYC U20s competition.

He studied a Certificate III Heavy Road Transport - Diesel Mechanic and now works fulltime locally in the transport industry.

“I’m fully qualified now and working for a family business at Rutherford called Hogan's Heavy Haulage,” Amey said after receiving the Hunter TAFE Student of the Month Award.

“I enjoy it all and love learning, it interests me."

On top of settling into a fulltime career, the powerful prop is a mainstay and leader within the Knights' NYC squad.

His commitment to developing as a better player has meant sacrifices, but being a member of the NYC team has been a rewarding experience for the South Lakes Roosters junior.

“It takes it out of me and I am tired a lot of the time doing 12 to 14 hour days as well as training and travelling, but you get used to it and I want to do it,” he said.

“I’m really enjoying my footy this year it and it’s a great experience.

"I hope I can keep playing footy and have a good season.”

Amey’s TAFE teacher Stewart Terrace praised the hard-working student for his ability to balance a busy schedule.

“He was quite a good student and had a lot of challenges living on the Central Coast and balancing work life with learning and TAFE,” he said.

Amey would often stay on campus at Kurri Kurri TAFE to save the trip back and forth each day.

Terrace was pleased to learn his former student had progressed from TAFE study is working in an industry he is passionate about.

“It’s quite amazing sometimes talking to students after they have left (TAFE),” he said.

“We see them through training but we don’t see what they’ve achieved after they’ve left.

“It’s only when they come back after they have completed training that we see they have grown and what they have learned and that they have taken things on board.”
