Despite a spirited comeback, the NYC Newcastle Knights were unable to overtake the Wests Tigers going down 32-28 at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday.
Knights TV spoke to coach Todd Lowrie and Jake McNamara following the Round 11 game.
“It was a really good effort in the end. We just let them get away to a 26, 28 points start until we wanted to play footy,” Lowrie said.
“I’m proud of the effort and that they got themselves back in the game, it was there to win but I'm disappointed we didn’t take advantage of it.
“We defended our line really well in the second half.”
The NYC saw a number of young players promoted to the side after playing with the SG Ball Knights
“We have a couple of guys who have stepped up form the 18s and they have done really well,” he said.
“Brayden Musgrove was on the wing today and it was his first game of NYC and he did really well.
“It’s encouraging for us that although we are a young team, we have some guys who are coming through.
“I thought Jake McNamara in our halves was really good and he played really well for us. We had some really good efforts particular from some guys in the middle.
McNamara was one of the more senior heads in the team and played an integral role in the team’s fight back.
“It was a really tough result in the end, we were down by a try but the boys fought back in the end,” he said.
“It wasn’t the best start we could have wished for but really good fight back to get us back in the game.
The hard working five-eighth scored two tries and converted four of the Knights five tries.
“I was happy with the game as it was a really good team effort, but I was happy to get a few tries,” he said.
“There have been a few young guys stepping up and they played really well,
“Tom Starling and Jonesy (Brodie Jones) played really well through the middle.”
“It’s going to be a long week and they’ll be tough training at the start of the week so we are fin tuned at the end of the week ready for a big game.”
