Description -

The Newcastle Knights were beaten 38-0 by the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium on Saturday evening.

With several changes before kick-off and Brock Lamb making his NRL debut, the red and blues were simply blown away by a Tricolours side riding high on the return of star players Mitchell Pearce and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.

While the Knights were well and truly in the contest in the first half with a disallowed try and some inspiring defence, the Roosters ran away with the result in the end, scoring four second-half tries.

A kick at the end of the Knights’ first set went out on the full to give the Roosters early attacking momentum. Blake Ferguson latched onto a kick in the in-goal soon after, but some close attention from Nathan Ross saw him drop it cold.

With 16 minutes played there was no stopping Ferguson, as he picked up the scraps from a Mitchell Pearce loose pass to run ten metres and score.

Three minutes later the Knights earned their first repeat set as Shaun Kenny-Dowell fumbled a Trent Hodkinson bomb.

Hodkinson looked like he got a try-assist soon after, the halfback looping the ball over several Roosters for Pat Mata’utia to stroll over the line. The video bunker ruled that Korbin Sims had obstructed Pearce in the build up though, and the home side escaped.

Korbin Sims was in the spotlight again soon after as he conceded a penalty ten metres out from his own line for not being square at marker. Hastings kicked from the tee to push the Roosters’ lead to 8-0, and minutes later the Roosters made a break from halfway for Pearce to score.

15 minutes into the second half the Roosters scored their third, lock Isaac Liu forcing his way over on the right. Hastings again converted to make the score 20-0, and ten minutes later Ferguson seized on an error from Ross to score in the corner.

With 13 minutes to play Ferguson scored, the centre seizing on a Pearce kick to claim his hat-trick. Mitchell Aubusson rounded out the scoring soon after, the final score 38-0.
