Newcastle Knight Jarrod Mullen has been named the 2015 Clubman of the Year after spending a significant amount of his own time participating in community and charity support work.
Throughout the season, he has actively sought out ways to benefit the community and use his profile to assist others. All of this done without seeking publicity or reward, just simply giving back to the community and helping others.
He initiated several visits to the John Hunter Children’s Hospital and also spent time visiting Ronald McDonald House, having dinner with the families and showing a genuine interest in those he engaged with. He took the time to learn more about their lives and sympathise with those experiencing difficulties.
For the past three years he has hosted his own skills clinics and continues to display enthusiasm and professionalism when sharing his knowledge and skills of the game with young participants.
Mullen is a strong believer in players giving back to the community that supports the team so passionately.
“I have been here a while now and think you need to give back to Newcastle in general,” he told Knights TV after accepting the award.
“(Newcastle) has been great to me since I’ve been here and the Knights wouldn't be who they are today without the community and people coming to support us.
"We get a lot of time off, so I think we should utilise it to help kids out."
The five-eighth is motivated to continue his work by the impact it has on the lives of those he spends time with.
"I know it’s a cliché, but seeing the smiles on the kids faces, I think it’s great," he said.
"The Knights do a lot in the community, and I do a lot outside of that.
"I think it’s great to go see the kids, it puts a smile on their faces and definitely puts a smile on my face that’s for sure."
Mullen was equally proud to be acknowledged by those involved with the Club who witness the difference he makes to others.
“It’s very overwhelming and emotional,” he said.
“It’s something I like to do and obviously don’t want the media attention.
"I like to do it off my own bat because it helps the kids in the community and as long as I can do that, I’m doing my part.”
