Newcastle Knights Jeremy Smith and Jarrod Mullen continued a 16-year tradition, attending the renowned Black Coal Cup Charity event in Muswellbrook that raises funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
Mullen and Smith were treated to a unique insight into the service provided to the community by taking an exhilarating ride in the rescue helicopter to the golf day event on Tuesday.
The pair took flight from the helicopter base in Broadmeadow on a dazzling spring day, across the Hunter Valley to land on Muswellbrook Golf Course.
More than 300 excited school children met the players on their arrival for a signing and photograph session before being given the opportunity to climb into the helicopter, have photos taken at the controls and the helicopters features explained by the skillful pilots.
One of the Black Coal Cup organisers, Joe Mattews spoke to Mullen about the Newcastle Knights’ long held affiliation with the charity event and the appreciation felt in the community for the Club’s continued support.
“All the school kids and the community gets involved in this day,” Matthews said.
“It is fantastic as this a major part of our day.
“The Knights have been involved at this event for 16-years.
“Everyone in the community looks forward to you guys coming up in the chopper, without it, the day just wouldn’t be the same as what it is.”
Mullen was proud of the history and partnership shared between the organisations and was thrilled to play a part in the annual charity event.
“It’s great to support events like this, especially the Westpac Rescue Helicopter,” he said.
“Everyone knows what they do in our community.”
