The Newcastle Knights were involved in National Meals On Wheels Day on Wednesday to celebrate the respected organisation that’s played an important part in the community for more than 60 years.

Newcastle Knights CEO Matt Gidley, player Jack Stockwell and Knights board member Katie Brassil helped to celebrate the occasion that aims to say thank you to the 75,000 volunteers who keep the service running around the country.

The Meals on Wheels service delivers nutritious meals and social interaction with the regular visits allowing clients to maintain independence in their own home.

“It’s a fantastic initiative, they are one of the many wonderful community organisations that fly under the radar,” Gidley said.

“As a Club we are really proud that we can help raise awareness of some of these fantastic organisations in town."

Stockwell and Gidley headed out to take part in some Meals on Wheels visits and relished the opportunity to meet the volunteers and clients involved with the service, some of who were avid Knights fans.

“It’s a great way to brighten someone’s day,” Gidley added.

“I’m grateful for the service that’s provided.

“I think it’s really humbling to know these people do this service every day."

Not only does the service deliver meals, but provides friendship and interaction to people who may not have family around or regular social interaction.

“To have someone arrive on their doorsteps with a meal, they are so grateful for that and we saw that on their faces," he concluded.
