Even though the sun was shining and the weather was warmer than it has been in Newcastle lately, the entire Newcastle Knights squad donned their Mark Hughes Beanies for Brain Cancer at training on Tuesday.

“Right across New South Wales and Australia now we’ve got people wearing beanies for brain cancer this week and bringing in a gold coin donation,” Foundation founder Mark Hughes told Knights TV.

The ‘Wear a Beanie for Brain Cancer Awareness’ annual event runs between July 20-24 each year and aims to raise important funds for brain cancer research.

“It’s been awesome and the Newcastle Knights have been at the forefront offering support since the start and I’m really grateful for the players and staff who have helped us out over the last few years,” he said.

The Knights jumped at the chance to wear their beanies as a sign of solidarity and support for both the charity foundation and Hughes who is a Knights Old Boy.

And it’s not just the Knights getting on board the worthy cause.

A raft of high profile NRL players have been spotted wearing their Mark Hughes Foundation Beanies including Jonathon Thurston who wore his while collecting the Man of the Match award after his Monday night’s Round 19 game.

“There’s lots of momentum,” he said.

“It’s huge for me. It’s a terrible disease and it’s tough.

“The support that I consistently get throughout the wider community as well as the NRL community is just overwhelming and gives me strength and makes the Foundation want to continue its hard work so we can make a real difference for brain cancer."

The Foundation has a wide range of projects it is directing funds to including research and support.

“It doesn’t happen over night and there’s lots of things to get done, but certainly all this support and help means we are nearly there,” he concluded.

It’s not too late to get involved in the Mark Hughes Foundation Beanies for Brain Cancer Awareness week.
