On the eve of the first game of the 2015 season, kick-off can’t come quick enough for the Newcastle Knights' five-eighth Jarrod Mullen.
“I think every team gets like that,” he told the media after Captain’s Run on Friday.
“We trained really hard in the pre-season and this is the fun part now.”
But as the energy and anticipation builds before the season opener, the 27-year-old believes composure will be the key in the challenging test against the New Zealand Warriors.
“Patience is a big thing we’ll work on tomorrow, we’re going to throw a lot of plays,” he said.
The talented playmaker has already claimed responsibility for his role in leading the red and blue around the park.
“I think it falls on mine and Tyrone’s (Roberts) shoulders to steer the team around well," Mullen added.
“If we are composed, the whole team will be.”
Much of the battle will take place in the middle against a formidable opposition.
“The Warriors are a big, strong physical team and they rely on their forwards,” he admitted.
“Our middles have a big job against their middles and will obviously have a bit of go forward from (Manu) Vatuvei and the outside backs, so it will be a good test."
Saturday’ game day marks the reunion of the 1988 inaugural Newcastle Knights team which will see more than 50 of the original players converge on Hunter Stadium.
“Anytime the Old Boys are around the young boys, it gives them a massive boost,” he admitted.
“They’ve done it all before and have been around the Club for a long time.
“I really look forward to playing in front of them.
“I love to see them and the boys definitely get a kick out of it."
The support from the more than 13,000 Members (link to announcement) and fans will make difference to the team’s resolve on Saturday also.
“We love to have a focus of getting the community in and we obviously have a big supporter base here in Newcastle," Mullen said.
“When the team is doing well, they come out to support us.
“We have a job to do and if they are going to come out to support us, we better put on a show.
“We are looking forward to the challenge.”
