With the sixth week of the Newcastle Knights’ pre-season done and dusted, Strength and Conditioning Coach Dave Ballard reviewed the week on Friday from Newcastle Golf Club where the players were taking part in the annual Corporate Golf Day.

“We’ve done a lot more speed work with the guys after they’ve done a fair bit of aerobic work this pre-season,” Ballard said.

“This has been a little bit of a change up with higher speed off the ground and getting more specific to footy now.

Chanel Mata’utia is one player who has knuckled down to be well prepared for when the season rolls around next year.

“It’s a bit of a mixture and something different compared to the previous years,” Chanel said.

“It’s been a bit different, we did the hills yesterday…so it’s been good so far.”

One of the highlights for the 22-year-old has been the Club training sessions on Saturdays which sees all three games take to the training paddock together.

“It’s good to get the young guys involved with the senior players,” he said.

After making his debut last season, Chanel is using the pre-season to identify areas of his game he can improve.

“I think my effort on effort during last year that I’m looking to pick up and work on more,” he said.

Check back next Friday for the Knights TV’s wrap of week seven of pre-season before the squad breaks for Christmas.
