The Newcastle Knights were naturally disappointed with Sunday’s 40-point loss in Cairns.
The Knights were in the match at 8-0 midway through the first half before Tom Burgess was awarded a controversial try and Dylan Walker scored a lucky try.
The Knights didn’t recover and the Rabbitohs stormed to a 50-10 win at Barlow Park.
“They blew us off the park, defensively we were off the pace,” captain Kurt Gidley said.
“We knew what was coming, they have a big forward pack and we thought we were ready for that.
“We didn’t have a great deal of field possession in the fist half.
“We had some decent kicks but the kick off sets after tries, they were making 60 metres.
“Even after kicks into the corners they were making yardage past halfway.
“We know as a team when we are playing well we are defending well, we have good line speed and we are keeping them inside their own half for that set.
“We weren’t achieving that a great deal today.”
While the result wasn’t what the Knights traveled to Cairns for, the team was pleased to play the Round 21 fixture in a regional area.
“It was a great ground to play at,” Gidley added.
“All the people around the streets were excited as were the players, it was a let down from our point of view.”
