Tyrone Roberts was dominant in Friday night's win over the Sydney Roosters, with the young halfback scoring a double and putting in the grubber kick for Joey Leilua to score in the dying minutes of the game.
It was an impressive second half in attack for the home side, after the Roosters lead 6-0 for the majority of the match.
“My adrenalin went through the roof and I just stood still and fist pumped,” Roberts said, describing the unforgettable moment after his kick set up Leilua’s match winning try.
“I just knew that it was for all the hard work we did during the game, it was just a relief to get a win.”
Roberts revealed he knew it was time to step up when the team was without captain Kurt Gidley and five-eighth Jarrod Mullen, who didn’t return in the second half due to an abdominal strain.
“Mullen was our last play option, so I knew I had to get in there and take more responsibility, and I think I did all right," Roberts said.
“I just knew that I had to step up.”
After last week’s disappointing loss in the RiseForAlex Round againt the Gold Coast Titans, Roberts was relieved the team could deliver the home crowd an entertaining win.
“We knew that we had to come out here with a big forward pack and aim up so it’s a credit to the boys because we did it tonight," he said.
“It was a tough loss last week and a credit to the boys because it was a short turn around.”
The Newcastle Knights are now Queensland bound to play the South Sydney Rabbitohs in Cairns on Sunday.
