The Newcastle Knights will unveil a unique Kokoda Spirit Award at Friday night’s end of season Presentation Night at Wests New Lambton.
Two emerging players chosen by the coaching staff will be awarded the Kokoda Spirit Award who not only optimise the Kokoda spirit but are considered future leaders of the Club.
“The Kokoda Spirit Award is about picking two young players from the Knights that have huge futures at the Club,” Advisory Board Chairman Paul Harragon said.
“The winners are players we want to invest our knowledge and time in and make them even better Clubmen for the experience.
“As a Club, we want to align ourselves to the Kokoda spirit and all the Diggers that fought so bravely there; because mateship, selfless acts, all those wonderful qualities that were at Kokoda, as a Club we want to really embrace that.”
Annually, the two winners will be joined by two Club mentors and do a week-long trek of the Kokoda in November.
Paul Harragon and Malcolm Reilly will join this year’s inaugural winners.
“Premiership winning coach Malcolm Reilly is a wonderful candidate to kick off this initiative,” Harragon added.
“He is renowned for his mental toughness, he won premierships with Manly, an England international and coached the Knights to a premiership.
“He is certainly as good as it gets and for a young bloke to be in his company, it is something of which to be proud.
“The two boys that are named on Friday night will get a bit of a shock but they are in for an experience of a lifetime.”
The Knights Presentation Night will be held at Wests New Lambton on Friday October 5.
