The Newcastle Knights NYC squad returned to the training paddock on Monday and just like their NRL counterparts, were put through a series of gruelling fitness tests.
Coach Mick Crawley said the results of fitness tests showed that his young players are a long way ahead of where they were last year.
“I was really happy with the condition the boys are in,” he told newcastleknights.com.au.
“Most of them are in their second year so they were a lot better prepared.
The Knights have 18 players returning to the NYC squad this year and three of those players in Chanel and Pat Mata’utia and Paterika Vaivai will train with the full time squad until the beginning of the 2013 season.
“We should have a fairly strong squad for next season,” Crawley said.
“It will be very beneficial having a group of boys that have been there and done it before.
“It is a very experienced side when compared to last year and I am hoping the boys take that on board and use the experience gained last season.”
Just like last season Crawley said the role of the coaching staff is to prepare the young players to play first grade for the Knights.
“We will continue on the same path as last year and mirror what the first grade are doing,” the coach explained.
