Newcastle Knights second rower Robbie Rochow has been named in the NRL/RLPA 2013 Academic Team of the Year, which honours the work NRL players are doing to prepare themselves for life after football.
Rochow is midway through a degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Newcastle and is pleased to be acknowledged for the work he is doing outside of football.
“A lot of people don’t see what you do outside of training and playing and to be recognised for doing something else is really nice,” Rochow said.
“I never planned on being an NRL player and needed to have something to fall back on.
“It has always been driven in me by my parents that education comes first, now it is probably a second priority to football but I will keep ticking along with this degree.
“Hopefully by the time I finish with football I am close to if not finished it and I can go straight in to work.”
The criteria for selection in the 2013 Academic Team of the Year, includes consistent NRL playing performances, commitment and progress in an educational program that is preparing players for a post-footy career and a positive influence on the other players within the club.
The 22-year-old has played all 21 games for the Knights this season and said the biggest hurdle he faces is time management.
“When I was playing in the under 20’s I was able to make every lecture and tutorial,” he explained.
“Now football is the priority, I miss some of the required study time during the week and have to make up for it in other times.
“Also playing NRL in your local town, you like to help out in the community and that also takes up a bit of time.
“I am only doing one subject now, one day a week so I have to really knuckle down and at the end of the day it comes down to self discipline and being able to allocate time each week to study.”
Teammate Alex McKinnon has also joined Rochow at the University of Newcastle this semester and is completing a degree in Business.
“It is good to see someone else at uni facing the same hurdles as me,” he added.
“Hopefully he can tick away just as I am doing with mine.”
