Leilua grateful for opportunity

After spending the last two weeks training with the Newcastle Knights squad, Joseph “BJ” Leilua is confident he is in the best place to make a fresh start.

“I am really enjoying being here and the boys have been treating me really well at training,” he told Knights TV.

“The senior boys have been giving me a lot of advice and have told me to train hard and see where you go from there.

“Willie Mason and Jeremy Smith have already made a difference and I am looking forward to the opportunity to keep training alongside them.”

Leilua, who has signed in principal to a contract with the Knights, previously played under Wayne Bennett during his time at the St George Illawarra Dragons.

“I am really excited about the chance to train and play under Wayne (Bennett) again, he is someone who has won a lot of premierships,” the 21-year-old said.

“It is really good knowing he wants me here and in return I hope I can give something back to him this season.”

The utility is currently living with Knights teammate and childhood friend Kevin Naiqama, who he says has made the move to Newcastle a lot easier.

“Kevie and I have known each other since we were little so I am grateful that I have him here,” he said.

“I grew up watching him play so it will be nice to play alongside him instead of against him this season.”

The Knights are unable to officially contract Leilua until the NRL confirm the salary cap for season 2013.
