With the help of the NRL’s CareerWise and Trading up with the NRL programs, Beau Scott, Matt Hilder and Korbin Sims have taken steps towards a career post football with Hunter TAFE.
NRL Traineeship and Apprenticeship Mentor Anthony Quinn has been busy working with the Knights' Career Coach Dean Noonan and TAFE Business and External Relationship Manager Belinda Smith to develop a flexible schedule for the players to complete their studies while still managing their commitments on the football field.
“This is a new business model for Hunter TAFE, one where we deliver our courses in a student-friendly manner that considers their needs, their aspirations and their circumstances,” Belinda Smith said.
“Flexible education platforms are the way of the future.”
With the help of the partnership between the Knights and Hunter TAFE as well as the support of Mentor Anthony Quinn, Beau Scott (electrician), Matt Hilder (plumbing) and Korbin Sims (carpenter) will complete their trades.
“We are delighted with the support Hunter TAFE has provided our players,” CEO Matt Gidley said.
“This is a significant cultural shift for our Club where we invest in our players long term career paths as well as providing them with every opportunity to achieve their football goals.”
The Knights are also grateful for the support shown by employers Paul Antunovich of A&P Plumbing, Stuart Dumbrell of GB Electrical and Daniel Burton of DRB Building.
“The Club’s Board have been overwhelmed by the support shown by the Newcastle Corporate Sector,” Chairman Paul Harragon added.
“They have provided career opportunities for these three players and also many of our younger players.
“Making it in the NRL is very competitive so we need to provide options for the players.”
The Knights also currently have six of their under 20’s players completing apprenticeships with the help of a flexible training schedule.
