The cup, named in honour of former Knights captain Paul Harragon, forms part of the ARL Development Legends of League seven-a-side concept where all NSW NRL clubs and state leagues have a legend attached to their club. Former Knights Captain Danny Buderus is the Forster club’s legend.

Harragon and current Newcastle Knights Ben Rogers, Cameron Ciraldo, Cooper Vuna and Richie Fa’aoso joined the young players and their families throughout the day; signing posters and stopping for photos with their fans.

“The Harragon Cup was a great day out,” said ARL Development Officer Helene O’Neill.

“Here in Newcastle we restrict entry to small schools as this is often the only chance these kids get to play rugby league and represent their school.

“I took a gamble on the weather but the surface at District Park was the best it has been in years.”

The tenth year of the annual competition has been its largest to date with 24 schools competing.

Harragon was on hand to present the trophy and he told onlookers that the standard of play was the best he had witnessed in the decade.

The winners, Marks Point, will represent the Newcastle Area at the State Legends Final day in Sydney on 25 August.
