NEWCASTLE THE PLACE FOR ME: HOUSTON
Monday, 23 November 2009

Towering utility forward, Chris Houston has secured his playing future, agreeing to a new two-year contract extension with the Newcastle Knights.

It's a move that could lead to Houston establishing himself as a Knight for life but he's wasted no time setting his short term goals....winning a Premiership and playing representative football.

Houston joined Newcastle in 2008 from St George Illawarra and debuted for the club against the Raiders in Round 1 at EnergyAustralia Stadium the same year.

Regarded by his peers as a natural leader, hard work and dedication saw Houston earn his first taste of representative football at the elite level when he was selected in the Kangaroos train on squad and as 19th man for New South Wales in this year’s Origin series.

“This is great news for the club and our members,” said Knights Coach, Rick Stone.

“Chris has proved to be a valuable member and respected leader of our playing group. He is a talented and natural athlete with great ability and he makes a valuable contribution behind the scenes with our team’s preparation.

“As head coach I couldn’t be happier to have Chris secured for the next three years.”

24 year-old Houston arrived at the Knights as a back rower but has since applied his trade to the front row after injuries to key players.

A qualified teacher, the Narooma Devils junior says the similarities between Newcastle and his home region made the transition to Novocastrian life and easy move.

“I’ve really settled into Newcastle and I couldn’t be happier to be calling this great place home. Knights members have gone out of their way to make me feel welcome.”

“We have a talented squad of players and great depth heading into the 2010 season. I believe we’re in great shape and I’m looking forward to playing my part in the exciting times ahead.”

Houston says he’s looking forward to continuing his work behind the scenes coaching junior players and assisting with the club’s community work, something he’s been involved with since arriving at the Knights.

“I feel it’s important to become part of the community and make a contribution to local charities and community groups.”

“We are in a privileged position as representatives of Newcastle and it’s rewarding to be able to give something back to the members who make a valuable financial commitment to the club.
