With last weekend’s unforgettable victory against reigning Premiers, Manly now a distant memory, the Newcastle Knights have wasted no time preparing for what is arguably their most important match so far – a showdown against the Warriors and possible back to back victories.
“We’ll draw some confidence out of the first four games – some confidence and some learning as well,” said Brian Smith.
It’s also a chance to re-establish EnergyAustralia Stadium as the Knights fortress – in the past for opposition teams, one of the most intimidating venues in the NRL competition.
“We’ve spoken a lot about our home crowd and our pride in our home performances,” said Cory Paterson.
“The Warriors have been our bogey team the last few times we’ve played them so we’re in for a big game.”
Head to head the Knights and the Warriors have met on 22 occasions with the Knights ahead 13 - 8 and one draw.
But while the Warriors are affected with the absence of Steve Price, Brent Tate possible Manu Vatuvei, the home side won’t be taking anything for granted.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Stacey Jones starts off the bench and comes on a little bit later because like us they’ve got a bit of flexability anout what they can do in those positions,” Smith said.
In good news for Knights supporters Jarrod Mullen trained well again this morning and will resume his spot on the Interchange with Cory Paterson who returns from an ankle injury.
Akuila Uate had another day on light duties with a hamstring tear but remains a chance of being a late inclusion while Wes Naiqama made a successful return from injury for Nelson Bay last night and may be considered for Coach Smith’s final lineup.
“Wes got through his game with the Bay no problems so unless something goes astray between now and Sunday it’ll be Keith Lulia coming into the side and we’ll work out from there whether Adam MacDougall goes to the wing or if Keith plays on the wing,” said Smith.
A two game Easter Sunday program kicks off at 11.45am when the National Youth Competition Knights host the Warriors and the main game gets underway at 2.00pm.
Gates open at 11.15am for members and 11.30am for the general public.
